Vessels with handmade character

Looking to level up your clay game? This hands-on ceramics workshop is all about learning the ancient (and oddly satisfying) coiling technique — and using it to build your very own vessel or vase with serious personality.

With step-by-step guidance from our instructor, you’ll shape your piece coil by coil, curve by curve — building form, balance, and your own artistic flair as you go. Whether you lean classic or a little wild, there’s plenty of room to experiment with size, silhouette, and style.

Expect useful demos, creative detours, and a relaxed studio vibe that encourages questions, happy accidents, and the occasional “what if I try this?” moment.

In this class, you will create a vase or vessel approximately 20–25 cm tall. This size is achievable for beginners within the available time using the coiling technique.

Once your piece is complete, we’ll glaze and fire it for you. Ready for pickup in around 4 weeks.

🎨 Want to give it colour too? You’ll get a discount to return for a painting session and decorate your ceramic creation with your own splash of magic.

This one’s for anyone who wants to slow down, shape something special, and make a piece that’s equal parts functional and fabulous.

Surface Art: Sgraffito

Unveiling Hidden Depths: a PIE Ceramic Workshop

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • PIE Ceramics Zürich
  • 2.5 hours
from 95.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

Scratch beneath the surface — and reveal something beautiful.

Sgraffito — from the Italian “to scratch” — is a decorative ceramics technique that’s all about revealing contrast, pattern, and surprise. In this inspiring 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to turn a simple slab of clay into a stunning ceramic plate using this ancient and captivating method.

We’ll start by rolling and shaping your plate by hand, then applying a layer of coloured slip (liquid clay). Once that’s set, the real magic begins — you’ll carve into the surface to create your own design, revealing the clay underneath in bold lines, fine textures, or whatever shapes your imagination leads you to. No drawing skills needed — just a sense of curiosity and a love of detail.

You’ll be guided every step of the way in a relaxed and welcoming studio atmosphere. From the first press of clay to the final scratch of your carving tool, you’ll explore the sgraffito process with hands-on support, plenty of encouragement, and a glass of something refreshing in hand — your choice of wine, tea, prosecco, or something non-alcoholic to sip as you shape.

After the session, we’ll take care of glazing and firing your piece. Your finished sgraffito plate will be ready for pickup in about 4 weeks. One plate is included in the price — if you’re inspired to make more, you can simply pay for extra materials on the spot.

This workshop is perfect for anyone looking to
slow down, scratch beneath the surface, and uncover something beautifully their own.

Maximalist Vessels: Sculpt with Flair

Shape & Fun: PIE Ceramics Event

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • PIE Ceramics Zürich
  • 2.5 hours
from 105.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

An expressive ceramics event where your vase gets the spotlight treatment.
Because some vessels just want more.

In this hands-on ceramics session, you’ll go beyond the basics and give your piece the flair it deserves—sculpted blooms, leafy curls, juicy fruits, or wild abstract forms that say “look at me” in clay.

First, you’ll build your base. Then, the drama begins.
With gentle guidance and space to explore, you’ll hand-shape your vessel and layer on character-packed additions—twists, curves, frills, and texture that turns your piece into a story.

Whether you’re into garden goddess vibes, surreal shapes, or bold maximalism, this is your space to experiment.
Expect sculptural techniques, clever attachment tricks, and plenty of “ooh, what if I did this?” moments. You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind vessel that’s part function, part fantasy, and unmistakably you.

Make something ordinary, extra.

In this class, you will create a vase or vessel approximately 20–25 cm tall. This size is achievable for beginners within the available time using the coiling technique.

FAQ - frequently asked questions about ceramics courses in Zurich

Do I have to register or can I just drop by?

It depends on the activity: Registration is required for workshops, courses and studio times so that we can prepare your space and materials. In the Creative Café we recommend booking - especially at weekends. Spontaneous drop-ins are sometimes also possible - just ask!

Do I need previous knowledge?

No, absolutely not! Our workshops are designed so that everyone can take part - whether beginner or professional.

What activities do you offer?

We offer a wide range of creative formats: Workshops, multi-day courses, studio classes and open studios. We offer programmes for all levels - from beginner to advanced. You can work with clay, paint ceramics, discover porcelain or try your hand at handbuilding, wheel throwing or glazing. There's something for everyone - come along and find your flow!

Do you also offer pottery courses for advanced potters?

Yes, definitely! If you already have experience, our Studio Classes or the Open Atelier are just right for you. Become a member, use the space for your projects - or get in touch with us directly so that we can find the right programme for you.

Can I glaze my works myself?

Yes, of course! You have the option of glazing your pieces in the Creative Café during opening hours - or you can register for a glazing workshop or a suitable course from our calendar.

When can I collect my finished ceramics?

After moulding or painting, your piece is glazed and fired once or twice, depending on the technique. It is usually ready for collection after 2-4 weeks - we will contact you as soon as it is ready!

Can I bring my own clay or glazes?

In short: better not - the stuff can explode in the oven! 🔥💥 But: If you have any special ideas or materials, please talk to our ceramics team. We'll see what's possible together!

Curious cat. Bold colours. Classic chaos.
What happens when a goldfish meets a black cat with zero self-control?
In this playful Matisse-inspired painting session, we’re recreating a scene full of bold shapes, vibrant colours, and a very curious kitty caught mid-mischief — paw deep in the fishbowl.

You’ll channel the flat, expressive style of Matisse while having a blast with colour blocking, composition, and a little chaos.
Perfect for cat lovers, colour fanatics, and anyone who believes art should make you grin.

Shaken, not Stirred (with oil)

Paint & Sip – PIE Guided Painting Event

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • PIE Action Painting Studio Basel
  • 2.5 hours
from 70.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

Sip, swirl, and let it shimmer — this time in oil.
Two cocktails clinking in the glow of summer — olives, cherries, citrus slices, and colours that feel like golden hour captured in glass. In this oil painting session, we take a very similar playful and elegant subject, but explore it through the richness and depth of oils, building luminous layers and soft transitions that bring the scene to life.

You’ll learn how to create transparent effects in glass using oil techniques — how to suggest liquid, reflection, and refraction without over-defining every detail. We’ll also explore how to build that signature shiny, glittering surface of a cocktail glass, where light breaks, bends, and sparkles across curves and edges.

Through layering, blending, and controlled brushwork, you’ll develop soft reflections and subtle colour shifts that make the glasses feel almost tangible. It’s all about capturing that balance between clarity and atmosphere — letting the paint stay fluid, luminous, and alive.
Bright, summery, and effortlessly chic — a glowing cocktail moment, reimagined in oils. 🍸

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

Paint & Sip – PIE Guided Painting Event

Up to 20% discount for Members

A wild abstract painting session full of colour, chaos, and satisfying texture.
Who needs brushes when you’ve got a spatula, a mountain of modelling paste, and a whole mood to express?
In this bold, all-in painting session, you’ll layer, swipe, and sculpt your way into pure colour play — no plan, no pressure, just bold marks and thick textures that practically stand off the canvas.

We’ll work point by point, swipe by swipe, building up vibrant patterns and punchy colour fields that shift as you move. It’s a little pointillist, a little sculptural, and totally freeing.
Expect music, mess, and moments of accidental brilliance. This one’s for anyone who’s ever wanted to stop thinking and just create.
More colour. More texture. More joy.
Bring the energy — we’ve got the paste.

✨ How PIE Semi-Guided Workshops Run
You arrive, take a breath, pick your welcome drink and settle into your spot at the table where the magic will happen. We start on time, so make sure you`re there and ready to dive in.

Next, your instructor takes the stage, giving you a quick, easy intro to the materials — a clear theme and technique to start with – think of them as your creative launchpad. From there, it’s all about what you do with it.

Then the fun really begins. Our instructors are there to show you the essentials, share tips, and keep you inspired… but the real magic happens when you dive into your own creative waters ;) Follow the guidance closely or take a playful detour – both paths are perfect.
It’s the ideal balance of support and self-expression: enough structure to feel confident, enough freedom to surprise yourself. A little deeper, a little more intentional, and always a lot of fun.

At the end, we bring everyone together for a group photo — your finished piece, great vibes.

Textured Dreamscapes I.

Paint & Sip – PIE Guided Painting Event

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • PIE Action Painting Studio Basel
  • 2.5 hours
from 75.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

Landscapes? More like dreamscapes. Let’s get surreal — in texture.
Ready to take your imagination one step further? In this textured edition of our dreamscapes, we move beyond the flat surface and start building dimension into your world. Using acrylic paint, modelling paste, sponge, and palette knife, you’ll create surreal landscapes that don’t just look deep — they feel deep.

Think shifting skies, floating forms, glowing colours, and layered structures that play with perspective. You’ll learn how to build up surfaces, combine abstract and semi-real elements, and use texture to guide the eye through space — reinforcing depth while keeping that dreamy, intuitive flow.
This isn’t about painting what’s “real” — it’s about constructing what feels real to you, layer by layer.

Swoosh. Twist. Take flight.
Time to throw perfection out the window and lean into the mess. In this semi-guided abstract session, we’re mixing bold colours, big moves.

In this painting session, we dive into pure movement. A single sweeping gesture unfurls across a soft gradient sky — a ribbon of lilac, coral, and deep violet dancing weightlessly in the air. The stroke feels alive, bursting with momentum, texture, and effortless grace.
No pressure, no rules — just color, flow, and instinct. You’ll create a piece that vibrates with energy yet feels calm at its core, a modern echo of motion frozen in the sweetest instant.

Fluorescent, fabulous, and floating straight into your heart.
Dive into the deep, dark, and dazzling as we paint one of the ocean’s most mesmerizing creatures: the jellyfish. Ethereal, elegant, and slightly alien, these drifting wonders take center stage in this glowing, one-night-only art session.

You’ll create your own luminous jelly in motion — translucent, flowing, and completely hypnotic. And here’s the twist: we’ll be using fluorescent paint that glows in the dark. Yep. When the lights go out, your jellyfish lights up like it just came back from a rave in the Mariana Trench. 🪼💫

Along the way, you’ll learn how to build your painting in layers — creating depth, movement, and that signature underwater glow. We’ll experiment with palette knife and sponge techniques to form soft gradients, organic textures, and fluid transitions. You’ll also explore opacity and transparency: how some colours cover, others reveal, and how combining both creates that magical, floating effect.
