From your first lump of clay to pieces you’ve thrown yourself.

There’s something almost hypnotic about watching a piece of clay take shape on the wheel – but getting there is a skill. And this course is where you learn it properly.

Starting from the very beginning, you’ll get comfortable at the pottery wheel and gradually build the techniques needed to create your own vessels. You’ll learn how to prepare and centre your clay, open it, pull up the walls and start controlling shape and proportion.

As the course progresses, you’ll move from simply keeping the clay under control to intentionally creating cups, bowls, small vessels and other forms – then refining, trimming and decorating the pieces you want to keep.

It takes patience. Things will wobble. Some pieces might collapse. And then suddenly your hands start understanding what to do – and that’s where the magic happens.

✏️ What to Expect

  • Guided demonstrations followed by plenty of hands-on practice
  • Your own workspace at the pottery wheel
  • A gradual progression from basic exercises to creating your own vessels
  • Individual feedback and guidance throughout the course
  • Time to repeat techniques, experiment and build confidence
  • Trimming, refining and decorating your selected pieces
  • An introduction to glazing and finishing your work

🧠 What You’ll Learn

  • How to prepare clay for throwing
  • How to centre clay confidently on the wheel
  • Opening the clay and establishing an even base
  • Pulling and controlling walls
  • Creating and refining different vessel shapes
  • Trimming and finishing your pieces
  • Basic surface decoration and glazing techniques
  • The foundations you need to continue practising wheel throwing independently

🤔 Is This the Right Course for Me?

This course is for you if you want to actually learn how to throw on the pottery wheel, rather than simply try it once.

You’ll probably enjoy it most if you like learning with your hands, don’t mind repeating a technique several times and find satisfaction in gradually getting better at something. Wheel throwing takes patience – your first bowl might be wonky, your second might collapse, and that’s very much part of learning.

If you’re mainly looking for a relaxed one-time experience and want to try the wheel without committing to learning the technique, our Wheel Throwing Taster Workshop might be a better fit.

But if you want to build solid foundations, understand what your hands are actually doing and gain the confidence to continue practising afterwards, this is your course.

Spin it. Shape it. Love the wonky bits.

Ever dreamed of making your own cup on the pottery wheel? This is your moment to try – no pressure, no perfection, just you, the clay, and the magic of Wabi-Sabi.

In this relaxed, beginner-friendly event, you’ll learn the basics of wheel throwing, how to center the clay, and how to pull up your very first form – maybe a cup, maybe something totally unexpected (and that’s perfectly okay).

We’ll embrace wobbles, curves, and character, celebrating the Japanese art of Wabi-Sabi – finding beauty in imperfection and joy in the process, not just the result.

No experience? No problem. You’ll leave with a piece that’s 100% yours – shaped by your hands and full of personality.

Lady of The lake

Guided Acrylic Painting Workshop

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • ZÜRICH · PIE Action Painting Park
  • 2.5 Hours
from 70.– CHF

Misty greens, quiet water, and a forest that feels almost enchanted.
Step into a serene, mystical landscape where a hidden lake rests between mossy rocks and dense foliage. This painting is all about exploring the richness of green — mixing a wide range of tones, from deep forest hues to soft, glowing highlights, to create a scene that feels alive, atmospheric, and full of depth.
We’ll work in multiple layers to slowly build the landscape, giving the forest and water a sense of space and immersion. You’ll learn how to create depth through colour variation, transparency, and texture — letting each layer add to the mood and mystery of the scene.

Using a mix of tools like palette knife, brush, and sponge, we’ll experiment with different techniques to bring the environment to life: textured foliage, soft moss on rocks, and shimmering reflections across the water’s surface.
It’s a process of building, blending, and discovering — where every shade of green adds to a calm, immersive world that feels both real and dreamlike.

Float, release, imagine.
In this acrylic session, you’ll paint Banksy’s iconic little girl — this time letting go of a cluster of drifting balloons — set against a bold, abstract background full of colour, texture, and playful motion. You’ll learn how to build dynamic layers with brushes and palette knives, blending shapes and strokes to create a vibrant atmosphere that makes the figure and balloons feel weightless.

No experience needed — just drop in, follow the guided steps, and enjoy painting something expressive, modern, and full of lift.

Heavy Blossom. Petals in 3D. Spring you can almost touch.
Ever wanted to paint something so lush you feel like you could pluck it off the canvas? This is your moment.

In this semi-guided, textured acrylic session, you’ll create a dreamy cherry blossom branch in soft pink hues, set against a hazy pastel background. With modelling paste, you’ll build thick, velvety petals and a sturdy branch that practically pop out of the painting.

We’ll guide you in mixing tender tones, sculpting with your palette knife, and layering texture so the blossoms feel weighty, rich, and irresistibly touchable.
Perfect for beginners, texture lovers, and anyone who wants to bring a little springtime magic into their space — no matter the season.

She’s floating. She’s glowing. She’s not thinking about emails.
A sunset painting session where calm meets colour and a surfer silhouette steals the scene.
In this dreamy painting session, you’ll capture the soft magic of a golden-hour ocean — warm pink skies, calm waves, and one cool surfer girl gazing toward the light.

You’ll work with gentle blends, soft silhouettes, and glowing tones to build a peaceful-yet-bold composition. The result? A moment of stillness that radiates summer mood, cinematic calm, and salty confidence.
No pressure. No rules. Just a canvas, some colour, and a vibe you might want to live inside forever.

Splash. Drip. Splatter. Total Freedom.
Looking for a creative experience that’s energetic, expressive and completely different from traditional painting?

Our Action Painting Workshop combines the excitement of throwing, dripping and splashing paint with the artistic principles behind creating a powerful abstract artwork.

After a short introduction, your instructor will guide the group through a series of Action Painting techniques while explaining how abstract paintings are built through composition, layering, colour relationships and texture. Rather than recreating a predefined motif, you’ll gradually develop your own artwork over approximately two hours, allowing every splash, brushstroke and creative decision to influence what comes next.

Action Painting is an intuitive journey. Every mark on the canvas becomes the starting point for the next, creating a continuous process of acting, observing and reacting. Along the way, you’ll experiment with a wide variety of paints, tools and creative techniques while your instructor shares demonstrations, artistic guidance and individual feedback whenever you need it.

No two paintings will ever look alike. While everyone explores the same techniques together, each participant follows their own creative path, discovering their own balance between spontaneity and intention.

Whether you’re looking to switch off after a busy week, reconnect with your creativity or simply experience painting in a completely different way, Action Painting offers the freedom to experiment while giving you the artistic guidance to turn expressive marks into a finished abstract composition.

You’ll leave not only with a unique artwork, but with a deeper understanding of how abstract paintings evolve—and the confidence to trust your own creative instincts.

8 arms. 0 stress. 1 fabulous underwater groove.

Ready to paint a sea creature with serious style? In this guided acrylic session, we’re heading to the ocean floor — where a bold, pink octopus takes center stage in its own slow-motion dance.

With dreamy underwater hues and swirling, hypnotic tentacles, this painting is a mix of elegance, mystery, and straight-up marine magic. Whether you keep it graceful or go full disco cephalopod, your canvas is your ocean.

We’ll guide you step by step — from sea-floor shadows to inky outlines — no scuba gear required. Just bring your curiosity, your chill, and a willingness to fall in love with tentacles.

Spinning Beginnings: First Steps on the Potter‘s Wheel

Wheel Throwing Beginner Course · 4 Weekly Classes

  • Multi-day Course
  • Beginner
  • BASEL · PIE Ceramics Studio
  • 4 × 2.5 hours
from 440.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

Down to Earth: First Steps in Ceramics

Handbuilding Beginner Course · 4 Weekly Classes

  • Multi-day Course
  • Beginner
  • ZÜRICH · PIE Ceramics Studio
  • 4 × 2.5 hours
from 370.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

A lump of clay. Two hands. Surprisingly many possibilities.

Handbuilding is where some of ceramics’ oldest techniques meet almost unlimited creative freedom. Using pinching, slabs and coils, you can turn clay into everything from cups and plates to vases and sculptural forms.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore the three fundamental handbuilding techniques: pinching, slab building and coiling. Each opens up a different way of working with clay and gives you new possibilities for creating both functional and decorative pieces.

Through a series of guided projects, you’ll gradually build your ceramic toolbox: learning how to construct, join and shape clay, play with textures and surface decoration, and finally glaze your creations.

It’s tactile, playful and wonderfully versatile – with plenty of room to experiment and develop pieces that feel completely your own.

✏️ What to Expect

You’ll explore the fundamental handbuilding techniques through a series of projects:

Pinching – shape your first cup or mug using one of the most intuitive ways of working with clay.

Slab Building – learn to work with rolled clay slabs and transform them into plates and other constructed forms.

Coiling – build upwards with coils of clay to create a vase or taller vessel.

Glazing & Finishing – explore colour and surface to give your handmade pieces their final character.

Throughout the course, you’ll receive demonstrations, individual guidance and plenty of freedom to interpret each project in your own way.

🧠 What You’ll Learn

  • The fundamentals of pinch pottery
  • How to construct forms using clay slabs
  • How to build larger and taller pieces using coils
  • How to join clay securely and create stable forms
  • How to control shape, thickness and structure
  • Surface decoration using textures, patterns and carving
  • The basics of glazing and finishing
  • How to combine these techniques when developing your own projects

🤔 Is This the Right Course for Me?

This course is a great fit if you enjoy making things with your hands, experimenting with form and texture, and having creative freedom within a guided learning process.

You’ll probably appreciate it most if you’re curious about how objects are constructed and enjoy the process of slowly building something from scratch. Handbuilding allows for precision, but it also celebrates irregularity, character and personal expression – your pieces don’t all need to look identical or perfectly symmetrical.

If you’re mainly interested in learning the technical skill of throwing symmetrical vessels on the pottery wheel, our Wheel Throwing Beginner Course is probably the better choice.

But if you want to build a broad foundation in ceramics, discover several versatile techniques and eventually combine them freely in your own projects, this is a fantastic place to start.
