Surface Art: Sgraffito

Unveiling Hidden Depths: a PIE Ceramic Workshop

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • PIE Ceramics Basel
  • 2.5 hours
from 95.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

Scratch beneath the surface — and reveal something beautiful.

Sgraffito — from the Italian “to scratch” — is a decorative ceramics technique that’s all about revealing contrast, pattern, and surprise. In this inspiring 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to turn a simple slab of clay into a stunning ceramic plate using this ancient and captivating method.

We’ll start by rolling and shaping your plate by hand, then applying a layer of coloured slip (liquid clay). Once that’s set, the real magic begins — you’ll carve into the surface to create your own design, revealing the clay underneath in bold lines, fine textures, or whatever shapes your imagination leads you to. No drawing skills needed — just a sense of curiosity and a love of detail.

You’ll be guided every step of the way in a relaxed and welcoming studio atmosphere. From the first press of clay to the final scratch of your carving tool, you’ll explore the sgraffito process with hands-on support, plenty of encouragement, and a glass of something refreshing in hand — your choice of wine, tea, prosecco, or something non-alcoholic to sip as you shape.

After the session, we’ll take care of glazing and firing your piece. Your finished sgraffito plate will be ready for pickup in about 4 weeks. One plate is included in the price — if you’re inspired to make more, you can simply pay for extra materials on the spot.

This workshop is perfect for anyone looking to
slow down, scratch beneath the surface, and uncover something beautifully their own.

Pouring Acrylics (Tree Ring & Flip Cup)

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • PIE Action Painting Studio Zürich
  • 2,5 Hours
from 110.– CHF

Up to 20% discount for Members

A workshop where the chaos is the point.
Get ready to tilt, swirl, flip, and pour! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn two of the most satisfying acrylic pouring techniques: Tree Ring and Flip Cup.

Acrylic pouring is all about letting the paint do its thing.  It’s unpredictable, a little messy, and incredibly satisfying.
Instead of brushes, you’ll work with fluid acrylics, tilting, layering, and guiding the movement across your canvas to create organic patterns, soft blends, and those signature “cells” that make every piece feel alive.

You’ll combine colours in a way that creates contrast and harmony at the same time, learning how different densities interact and how small shifts in movement can completely transform the result. From smooth, flowing gradients to bold, marbled effects — no two pours ever turn out the same.

You’ll create 3 unique artworks on 30 × 30 cm canvases, and yes:
It’ll look like you totally meant to do that.
Perfect for beginners, mess-lovers, abstract enthusiasts, and anyone who secretly wants to fling paint around without judgement.

✨ How PIE Pouring Workshops Runs
Acrylic Pouring is one of the most mesmerising – and yes, also one of the messiest – ways to paint. If you’ve ever fallen into the endless stream of pouring videos online, you’ll know how unpredictable (and sometimes frustrating) it can be to figure it out on your own.

You arrive, take a breath, pick your welcome drink, and settle in at your table — where the magic begins. We start on time, so make sure you’re ready to dive in. Your instructor gives you an in-depth introduction to the pouring materials and techniques — nothing overwhelming, just enough to get you comfortable and inspired. They’ll also demonstrate the process step by step in real time, sharing the essential know-how so you can skip the long trial-and-error phase. You’ll learn how to mix your paints to the right consistency, control the flow, and use different pouring techniques without creating unnecessary chaos.

The goal isn’t to take away the magic of experimentation, but to give you a shortcut to the satisfying part — where colours flow, react, and create beautiful, organic patterns. Less guesswork, less mess, and more time to actually enjoy this fluid, almost hypnotic way of painting.

It’s one of those workshops where it’s very hard to get it “wrong.” Almost anything you do will lead to interesting and beautiful results, which makes it especially rewarding and forgiving. Because of this, it’s perfect for complete beginners who have never worked with acrylic paint before.

We provide everything you need:

  • A warm and friendly learning environment
  • All necessary materials and tools
  • A mix of demonstration & individual guidance
  • Artistic freedom — everyone interprets the technique their own way

Whether you’re a motivated beginner or a curious creative, this is the space to dive deeper, discover new methods, and leave with a skill that sticks. All you need to bring is your good vibes and curiosity! We’ll take care of the rest — starting with a complimentary welcome drink 🥂 to spark your creativity.

🖼️ Canvas Size
Your ticket includes three 30 x 30 cm canvases.

See beyond the flower — and turn it into pure colour and feeling.
In this oil painting workshop, we zoom in on a red parrot flower, inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s iconic way of transforming flowers into bold, enlarged worlds of colour and form - sensual, expressive, and almost abstract.

The focus of this session is on colour depth and emotional expression. You’ll work with a rich spectrum of red tones, learning how to mix, layer, and refine colour to create vibrant variation and subtle shifts in hue. We’ll also explore blending techniques, soft transitions, and how to smooth edges to create a flowing, almost dreamlike composition.

This is a deeply sensory painting experience — elegant, expressive, and open. While it carries a soft, feminine energy, it is absolutely for everyone. All genders are warmly welcome to create their own interpretation of this iconic, O’Keeffe-inspired floral world.

You’ll leave with a striking, close-up floral masterpiece that feels both powerful and poetic — a study in colour, emotion, and presence.

Shaken, not Stirred (with oil)

Paint & Sip – PIE Guided Painting Event

  • Workshop

  • PIE Action Painting Studio Basel

Sip, swirl, and let it shimmer — this time in oil.
Two cocktails clinking in the glow of summer — olives, cherries, citrus slices, and colours that feel like golden hour captured in glass. In this oil painting session, we take a very similar playful and elegant subject, but explore it through the richness and depth of oils, building luminous layers and soft transitions that bring the scene to life.

You’ll learn how to create transparent effects in glass using oil techniques — how to suggest liquid, reflection, and refraction without over-defining every detail. We’ll also explore how to build that signature shiny, glittering surface of a cocktail glass, where light breaks, bends, and sparkles across curves and edges.

Through layering, blending, and controlled brushwork, you’ll develop soft reflections and subtle colour shifts that make the glasses feel almost tangible. It’s all about capturing that balance between clarity and atmosphere — letting the paint stay fluid, luminous, and alive.
Bright, summery, and effortlessly chic — a glowing cocktail moment, reimagined in oils. 🍸

Most of our events take place in our beautiful, cosy studios in Zürich and Basel — fully equipped, full of charm, and designed to spark your imagination. Every now and then, we also pop up in partner venues like bars, cafés, or sunny outdoor locations.

Vessels with handmade character

Looking to level up your clay game? This hands-on ceramics workshop is all about learning the ancient (and oddly satisfying) coiling technique — and using it to build your very own vessel or vase with serious personality.

With step-by-step guidance from our instructor, you’ll shape your piece coil by coil, curve by curve — building form, balance, and your own artistic flair as you go. Whether you lean classic or a little wild, there’s plenty of room to experiment with size, silhouette, and style.

Expect useful demos, creative detours, and a relaxed studio vibe that encourages questions, happy accidents, and the occasional “what if I try this?” moment.

In this class, you will create a vase or vessel approximately 20–25 cm tall. This size is achievable for beginners within the available time using the coiling technique.

Once your piece is complete, we’ll glaze and fire it for you. Ready for pickup in around 4 weeks.

🎨 Want to give it colour too? You’ll get a discount to return for a painting session and decorate your ceramic creation with your own splash of magic.

This one’s for anyone who wants to slow down, shape something special, and make a piece that’s equal parts functional and fabulous.

Surface Art: Sgraffito

Unveiling Hidden Depths: a PIE Ceramic Workshop

  • Workshop
  • Beginner
  • PIE Ceramics Zürich
  • 2.5 hours
from 95.– CHF
