Beyond the Basics: A PIE Course
- PIE Event
- Advanced
- PIE Zürich
- 4 × 2.5 hours
Up to 20% discount for Members
Master the face in four weeks — one line at a time.
Want to draw portraits that actually look like people? This four-week course is here to help you understand the structure of the human face — and give you the tools, techniques, and confidence to draw it like a pro.
You’ll work with a variety of materials including pencil and charcoal, and each session will focus on a specific element of portrait drawing: structure, features, proportion, light and shadow, expression, and more.
Each class includes a short demo & discussion, followed by guided exercises — first from photo reference, and in the final week, you’ll draw from a live model right in the Studio.
✏️ What to Expect
A deep dive into portrait drawing fundamentals — over 4 evening sessions
- Explore different media: pencil, charcoal, pastel, and sanguine
- Learn facial construction, anatomy, gesture & expression
- Weekly drawing exercises from reference images
- A full live model session in the final class
- Feedback, support & gentle critique throughout
- All levels welcome (though some drawing experience helps!)
🎒 What’s Included
- All materials (paper, drawing tools, boards, etc.)
- Studio use & storage for your artworks
- Live model posing in week 4
- Individual guidance and instructor feedback
Just bring your curiosity and a positive attitude — we’ll take care of the rest!
💡 What You’ll Learn
- Basic face construction: skull shapes, symmetry, planes
- Drawing key features: eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair
- Shading and light techniques to create depth
- Proportions, structure & expression
- How to capture personality — not just likeness
🎯 Is This Course Right for Me?
If you’ve done our Introduction to Drawing Course, or have basic drawing experience, this is your next step. You’ll build a strong foundation for portraiture and grow your skills week by week.
Even experienced artists will benefit from focused exercises and live model practice. For more advanced students, join our studio sessions for more independent, project-based learning.
📦 A Few More Things to Know
- Arrival: Please come 15 minutes early to settle in and connect with your classmates.
- Storage: We’ll safely store your creations between classes and package them nicely at the end of the course.
- Keep practicing: Learning doesn’t stop when class ends. We recommend joining our studio sessions to continue growing in a supportive, creative community.
🥂 First Class Vibes: Sips, Snacks & Hellos
We like to start things off on a warm and social note. During the first class, we’ll take a little extra time to get to know each other — and we’ll celebrate the beginning of your creative journey with a complimentary welcome drink. Choose from:
- A soft drink or hot drink
- A glass of wine, prosecco, or beer
- Or our rotating Cocktail of the Week
You can also upgrade to one of our signature drinks, mocktails, or smoothies for just CHF 5–9.

Urban Sketching
Bringing Buildings to Life: A PIE Workshop
- Workshop
- Advanced
- PIE Zürich
- 3 Hours
Up to 20% discount for Members
Grab a pen. Hit the streets. Sketch it like you mean it.
This one-day workshop is your intro to the world of urban sketching — drawing on location, from life, in your own loose and lively style. You’ll learn to capture buildings, spaces, and atmosphere with quick lines, expressive marks, and your own point of view.
We’ll start with a hands-on intro to sketching basics: shapes, shading, perspective, and how to simplify what you see. Then we head out for a series of guided mini sketching sessions — from leafy parks to cosy cafés to bustling city corners (indoor options too, if it rains).
You’ll use pencils, coloured pencils, pens and markers — and get to try out different tools as you go. We’ll provide everything you need, including a portable sketchpad and a folder to collect your favourite sketches.
✏️ What to Expect:
- Learn the basics of observation, shape, and quick composition
- Sketch at several real locations throughout the day
- Try out a range of materials and techniques
- Get tips, feedback, and support as you draw
- Take home your own mini sketch collection in a tidy A4 folder
No experience needed — just a curious eye, a steady-ish hand, and a sense of adventure. Let’s hit the streets (or the sidewalks) and turn everyday views into little works of art.
✨ How the Workshop Works
Think of a Paint It Easy event — but with more time, more technique, and more creative depth. Our workshops are all about learning something new and meaningful while still enjoying the relaxed, feel-good PIE vibe.
Each workshop is guided by a professional artist and focuses on a specific creative technique, style, or material. Whether you’re trying it for the first time or want to deepen existing skills, you’ll get personal guidance, hands-on support, and time to really explore the process.
Most workshops take place in our beautiful, cosy studios in Zürich or Basel — full of colour, creativity, and a welcoming atmosphere. From time to time, we also host them at inspiring partner venues or outdoors in the sunny season.
No stress, no pressure — just a great setting to experiment, learn something new, and create something truly yours.
We provide everything you need:
- A warm and friendly learning environment
- All necessary materials and tools
- A mix of demonstration & individual guidance
- Artistic freedom — everyone interprets the technique their own way
Whether you’re a motivated beginner or a curious creative, this is the space to dive deeper, discover new methods, and leave with a skill that sticks.
🥂 A Toast to Creativity
We kick off every workshop with a complimentary welcome drink — the perfect way to settle in, connect with fellow creatives, and get inspired. Choose from:
• A soft drink or hot drink
• A glass of wine, prosecco, or beer
• Or our rotating Cocktail of the Week
Want to treat yourself? Upgrade to one of our signature cocktails, mocktails, smoothies, or special drinks for just CHF 5–9.
