Sgraffito — from the Italian “to scratch” — is a decorative ceramics technique that’s all about revealing contrast, pattern, and surprise. In this inspiring 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to turn a simple slab of clay into a stunning ceramic plate using this ancient and captivating method.
We’ll start by rolling and shaping your plate by hand, then applying a layer of coloured slip (liquid clay). Once that’s set, the real magic begins — you’ll carve into the surface to create your own design, revealing the clay underneath in bold lines, fine textures, or whatever shapes your imagination leads you to. No drawing skills needed — just a sense of curiosity and a love of detail.
You’ll be guided every step of the way in a relaxed and welcoming studio atmosphere. The river kingfisher, also known as the "river guardian," holds a special place in mythology and folklore. According to ancient tales, this powerful bird is said to have the ability to control the flow and direction of rivers. It is revered as a protector of the waterways and is believed to bring prosperity and abundance to those who honor it.
In many cultures, the river kingfisher is seen as a symbol of strength and resilience. Its long, slender body and shimmering scales are said to represent the powerful forces of nature, while its piercing gaze and sharp beak are thought to represent the bird's fierce protection of its territory.
As we paint our own river kingfisher, we can draw inspiration from these myths and legends, as well as from ZhuZhu depiction of this stunning bird. We can use bold, sweeping brushstrokes to capture the power and majesty of this majestic creature, or we can use softer, more subtle strokes to convey its grace and elegance.
You’ll work with rich earthy tones, layered brushstrokes, and flowing lines — all on a plate that’s made to last. It’s expressive, bold, and just a little hypnotic.

It depends on the activity: Registration is required for workshops, courses and studio times so that we can prepare your space and materials. In the Creative Café we recommend booking - especially at weekends. Spontaneous drop-ins are sometimes also possible - just ask!
No, absolutely not! Our workshops and events are designed so that everyone can take part - whether beginner or professional.
We offer a wide range of creative formats: Events, workshops, multi-day courses, studio classes and open studios. We offer programmes for all levels - from beginner to advanced. You can work with clay, paint ceramics, discover porcelain or try your hand at handbuilding, wheel throwing or glazing. There's something for everyone - come along and find your flow!
Yes, definitely! If you already have experience, our Studio Classes or the Open Atelier are just right for you. Become a member, use the space for your projects - or get in touch with us directly so that we can find the right programme for you.
Yes, of course! You have the option of glazing your pieces in the Creative Café during opening hours - or you can register for a glazing workshop or a suitable course from our calendar.
After moulding or painting, your piece is glazed and fired once or twice, depending on the technique. It is usually ready for collection after 2-4 weeks - we will contact you as soon as it is ready!
In short: better not - the stuff can explode in the oven! 🔥💥 But: If you have any special ideas or materials, please talk to our ceramics team. We'll see what's possible together!
