This course aims to teach students a deeper understanding of the human face and form through portrait drawing. This course will provide a solid foundation of basic portrait drawing skills that can be further developed.

What to expect?

  • Throughout the course, students will experiment with different drawing materials such as pens, pencils, charcoal, pastel, and sanguine.
  • Each class will begin with a focused discussion and demonstration on a specific aspect of portrait drawing, followed by guided drawing exercises from a live model.
  • Students will have the opportunity to work with a live model.
  • In-depth critiques and individualized feedback will be provided to help students improve their portrait drawing abilities.

What is included:

  • All materials such as paper, drawing tools, boards, etc. are included. Students do not need to bring anything except a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • A posing live model in each session.

What you will learn:

  • Basic knowledge about constructive anatomy, human skull proportion, learning specific parts of the face, eyes, and nose, ears, and brow, among others.
  • Techniques for accurately capturing the human face form.
  • The role of gesture, line, and form in portrait drawing.
  • How to create depth and dimension in portrait drawings.

Is this course right for me?

This course is recommended for students who have completed the Drawing I course or have equivalent experience. Experienced students are also welcome to attend and benefit from practicing drawing with a life model. This course will help to further develop students' existing portrait drawing skills and knowledge.

Some important things to keep in mind:

  • We encourage all students to arrive 15 minutes before the start of class. This will allow us to start on time and will give you the opportunity to socialize with other students and share drawing tips, discuss at-home practice, and provide help or receive help from others. This will help everyone improve their skills and achieve better results.
  • We will be happy to store your artwork throughout the course. On the last class we nicely package it so you can take it home and have guiding references while practicing your newly acquired skills.
  • This course will provide you with the intermediate knowledge and skills needed for portrait drawing, but it is important to practice regularly to fully incorporate this knowledge. Our studio classes offer the opportunity to continue practicing in a community of like-minded individuals up to two days a week (Mondays and Wednesdays, from 19.00 to 21.30).
