Title of Workshop:

Linocut Printmaking with Marcela Montes.

Short description of the workshop

This workshop provides an introduction to a classical printmaking technique through the process of making a linocut print. Linocut is a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used as a relief surface for printing.

What to expect?

The design (or drawing) is copied onto the linoleum surface and carved with a special V-shaped knife (called chisel). Then the linoleum plate is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric. The finished print will be a mirror image of your original drawing. The actual printing is done by hand and can be repeated several times and with different colors.

  • In case you are out of ideas, Marcela prepares various designs for you to carve and print. Carbon paper will be used to easily trace the design to the linoleum plate.
  • You will have your own tools to work with. You will carve a design into an A5 size linoleum plate.
  • You are going to make your first print on a special paper, then on a 100% cotton tote bag. Further sheets of paper and other fabrics can be purchased on the spot.

What is included?

  • The workshop is fully guided by Argentinian graphic artist Marcela Montes
  • All materials included such as carving tools, linoleum plates, ink, brayer and printing paper.
  • In the studio, participants can optionally purchase tote bags and pillowcases to make further prints on. A bag costs 10 CHF, a pillowcase 12 CHF.
  • You are welcome to bring along your own stuff to print on. If you bring textiles, like T-shirts or bags, pay attention that they should be 100% cotton.

What you will achieve?

  • You will be able to carve a variety of marking techniques using linocut tools
  • You will learn how to make a one and a two-color linocut print
  • You will learn how to print your design by hand on paper and textile
  • You will create a linocut design that can be printed many times on different surfaces

Is this course right for me?

The workshop does not require any artistic or drawing skills. It is designed for complete beginners who would like to jump into the world of linocut.
