Introduction to Abstract Painting

Short description of the course

Plato found great beauty in simplified forms such as lines and circles. He praised the fact that a painting finds beauty not only in the realistic reproduction of an object but in every line and every spot of color. Abstract painting is the process of arranging colors, contrasts, lines and geometric forms. In doing so, abstract art does not attempt to represent an accurate image of a visual reality. Abstract painting calls for spontaneity and expression. It can be systematic or a reflection of the inner emotional world or one's own interpretation of the outside world.

What to expect?

Join Jael and explore the fundamental approaches to making abstract art on this 6 week course, developing your understanding of colour, gesture, scale, form, shape and line.

This hands on course consists of practical demonstrations and individual practice - encouraging you to let go of traditional visual references and subject matter.

You will develop your own visual language and improve your understanding of the principles of painting through experimentation. To compliment your learning, there will be references to contemporary and historical examples of abstract art and abstract artists throughout the course.

What is included?

  • The workshop is fully guided by Swiss visual artist Jael Ludewig
  • All materials such as papers, canvases, boards, painting equipment, etc.

What you will achieve?

By the end of the course you will have created a number of paintings which explore different concepts of abstract art in your own style. You will have also further developed your understanding of abstract painting.

Is this course right for me?

This course is designed for hobby painters wishing to experiment with themes of abstract art, although it would also be suitable for beginners eager to be introduced to painting in this style.

Meet your artist tutor

Hello, I am Jael. I am tutoring the „Semi guided workshop“ and „Introduction to abstract art“. In my artistic practice I mostly paint with oil on canvas and expose myself to experimenting. I try to create bridges between painting, music, poetry and sculpture. On the side, I am passionate about playing the bass, guitar and harmonica and sewing hats with birds on them.

I like to stand in the atelier all day and work. Every morning I am fascinated by not knowing what will happen throughout the day. I love to just start creating and follow my intuition – to listen and respond to myself and be in the flow of creativity. That's also the essence of my classes and what I want participants to take along.
